Tomas Moving Into Open Atlantic

Rescue workers and emergency managers are breathing a sigh of relief that Tomas didn’t cause huge problems in earthquake ravaged Haiti.  Heavy rains soaked the country and waves battered seaside towns, but the refugee camps have apparently escaped relatively unscathed.

In a miraculous development this week, thanks to wind shear and dry air, Tomas weakened over the warm water of the Caribbean as it meandered westward and then curved northward.   The storm waited until late in the game to restructure and intensify, sparing the island of Hispaniola the affects of a major hurricane.

Tomas is 115 miles NNE of Grand Turk Island in the southeastern Bahamas. It is moving NE at 16 mph. All coastal warnings and watches have been discontinued. Tomas will hold its own or even reintensify just a tad over the next 24 hours before weakening and becoming extratropical.
