Heads Up Lamar County (and northern Pickens)

To our friends in Lamar County…as well as those in Pickens County.

That’s a dangerous storm passing near Starkville right now…it will move near Columbus and then toward Lamar County and northern Pickens County in West Alabama. It will be into West Alabama between 11:30 and 11:45. A tornado warning is in effect for the storm.

It appears to be turning a little to the right, perhaps following the warm frontal boundary that is in that area…which makes it even more dangerous…with a higher tornado potential.

1 inch hail was just reported 4 miles south of Starkville…an indication that the storm is definitely severe.

This gives you a little extra time to alert friends, neighbors and relatives who might not be awake or monitoring the weather situation and could give you time to leave mobile homes for more substantial shelter.

A tornado watch will likely be forthcoming within the hour for parts of West Central and Northwest Alabama into the Huntsville area. The SPC just issued a mesoscale discussion highlighting the tornado threat from Lamar and Pickens Counties up to around Huntsville.
