Last Deadly Tornado of Terrible 1953
On this date in 1953, thirty eight people died when an F4 tornado slammed into the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi on a Saturday evening. It would be the last killer tornado in the very terrible tornado season of 1953. A total of 519 people lost their lives in tornadoes during that deadly year, a number that has never been threatened since.
The deadliest tornadoes of that year were
1) An F4 that struck Flint, Michigan on June 8th killing 115
2) An F5 tornado that leveled downtown Waco, Texas on May 11th killing 114
3) An unusual F4 that struck Worcester, MA the day after the Flint disaster, killing 94
4) The Vicksburg tornado – 38 fatalities
5) An F4 that killed 19 at Warner Robbins, Georgia n April 30th
