A Slow Warm-Up

| December 16, 2010 @ 3:09 am | Reply

While most of Alabama is already warmer at 3:00 AM than it has been in almost a week, a small part of the state is still hovering near freezing, and road conditions may still be slushy or icy. All airport “official” temperatures are over 32º at this time, but some personal rooftop and backyard thermometers around Etowah, Cleburne, Cherokee, and DeKalb Counties still show 31º to 33º, and that is cause for some concern for a few more hours.

Bridges may still be icy in higher terrain in eastern Alabama, but from Cullman to Birmingham and Clanton west (I-65 and west), we are well above freezing and will face no travel issues.

Warmer air continues to move in today. It’s already in the lower 60s down in Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. That air gets into Tuscaloosa and Birmingham this afternoon. Expect it to stay in the upper 40s in Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, and Cleburne Counties; lower to middle 50s are likely in Gadsden, Anniston, and Cullman.

**UPDATE AT 4:30 AM**

Due to lingering patchy ice in northeastern Alabama, several school systems are on a two-hour delay today:

-Gadsden City Schools
-Etowah County Schools
-Attalla City Schools
-Gadsden-Etowah County Head Start
