Don’t Let Your Guard Down

That was a major ice event across Alabama today (Wednesday) This evening, all of the precipitation has moved out of Extreme NE Alabama.although there may be a little drizzle hanging tough.

But is is way too early to assume that all roads, highways, bridges, overpasses are now dry and no longer dangerous. This is especially true in the higher terrain of NE Alabama where the most serious icing did not occur until this afternoon. At one time earlier tonight, numerous roads were icy and dangerous across Etowah County. At one time this evening all roads on Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain were closed. And, there were numerous accidents.

A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect until midnight for Jackson, Dekalb and Marshall County in the NE corner of Alabama. It was still a cold 30 degrees in Gadsden at 9 o’clock tonight.

Let me suggest this: If you are going to be out driving later tonight or even very early tomorrow morning, don’t assume that all of the ice has vanished. Especially if you are driving through areas that had a whole lot of accidents due to ice. For example, there could still be patches of ice in the hilly terrain in the Greater Birmingham area and surrounding counties. Lots of accidents occurred in those areas.

By 9 o’clock tonight, the temperature had edged upward to 43 in Tuscaloosa and 39 in Birmingham. And, that is a good thing.

A good chance of showers tomorrow (Thursday) but temperatures should be well into the 50s and that is another good thing.

I have no way of knowing how many accidents across Alabama today (Wednesday) But it had to be several hundred.
