Some in Central and North Alabama are waking up to a little wintery mix with light snow/light freezing rain especially north of Birmingham – generally north of the I-20 corridor. To the south of the I-20 corridor, precipitation is rain. Through about noon or so, some travel issues will be possible along and north of the I-20 corridor where temperatures remain close to the freezing mark. Fortunately, precipitation will be relatively light and temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s during the afternoon.

The precipitation should be ending this afternoon with most places south of the I-20 corridor collecting about a quarter of an inch of water. For Sunday and Monday we turn dry and stay chilly as lows and highs remain below seasonal values. Look for lows in the 20s and highs in the 40.

With a ridge aloft, we should be warming up Monday and Tuesday as highs climb into the 50s – perhaps getting close to 60 by Wednesday. A fast moving short wave well north of us will bring some clouds and shower chances to the area on Tuesday. The flow remains fairly fast, so the rain chances will come and go quickly with only small amounts of rainfall. And what rain does fall will be spotty.

A ridge to our west will come our way Wednesday bringing us dry and warmer weather. A digging trough over the western Great Lakes area on Friday will bring another round of chilly weather to Alabama and the Southeast US for Christmas weekend. It does not appear to be much chance for a white Christmas as the system will be pretty typical for us – that is, the moisture gets out of here as the cold air arrives. So right now Christmas Day looks dry but cold with a good chance of snow flurries across Middle and East Tennessee.

Looking out into the week after Christmas, the flow remains active with a continual series of disturbances moving across the country. However, instead of that deep trough across the East Coast, the GFS is painting a large ridge especially by January 2nd. If this comes to be, we could be seeing much above seasonal temperatures as we head into the early days of 2011. Don’t you just love the weather roller coaster??!!
