Widespread Winter Storm Watches

Winter storm watches have been posted for a wide area from East Texas (starting Sunday morning) into Central South Carolina (starting late Sunday night) for the storm that will develop over the Gulf of Mexico. Travelers will want to take this into account over the Sunday – Tuesday time frame.

The darker blue areas are winter weather advisories for tonight and Saturday night for light snow that is wrapping around the big upper low. There are winter storm warnings in effect for the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, where 3-6 inches and locally 4-8 inches of snow will fall overnight and on Saturday. Places like Boone NC and Gatlinburg and Cades Cove are affected.

A FEW SPOT FORECASTS
…Shreveport, Tyler and Texarkana: 2-4 inches of snow and 1-2 inches of sleet Sunday morning and Sunday evening.
…Hot Springs/Little Rock: 2-4 inches of snow with locally higher amounts in the 4-6 inch range possible.
…Memphis and extreme northern Tennessee: 3-6 inches of snow.
…North Central Mississippi: 4-8 inches of snow
…I-20 corridor in Mississippi: up to 4 inches of sleet and snow.
…Alabama: 3-6 inches of snow across the Tennessee Valley, with 4-8 inches from south of the Tennessee Valley to a line south of Tuscaloosa to between Calera and Clanton over to around Lafayette or Roanoke.
…Georgia: Carrollton to Atlanta 3-5 inches of snow and sleet. North of this area, 5-7 inches all t he way to the Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina borders.
…South Carolina…including Columbia: light snow accumulations Sunday night and more significant accumulations Monday.
