A Wintry Evening in Alabama

| January 9, 2011 @ 7:42 pm | 5 Replies

At 7:30 this evening, were getting numerous reports of moderate to heavy snow in Jefferson and surrounding counties. The ground was white in many areas. Unfortunately, travel is still hazardous because of earlier freezing rain and sleet.

Radar shows wintry precipitation still in progress all the way westward across all of Mississippi and Arkansas. Probably the best chance of freezing rain in Alabama for the next several hours will be across West Alabama mainly west of I-65.

Numerous accidents this afternoon and early this evening all across the area. Quite a few roads closed including all roads in Perry County.

The Winter Storm Warning continues in effect for a large part of Alabama for the rest of tonight and all day Monday. To the south, it is an Ice Storm Warning.

SPOT REPORTS AT 7 PM CST
Birmingham 30, light sleet
Tuscaloosa 30, cloudy
Haleyville 25, light snow
Shelby County Airport 30, a mix of wintry precipitation
Anniston 31, a wintry mix
Northeast Trussville 30, moderate to heavy snow, big flakes

A CHANGE
National Weather Service, Birmingham, was originally calling for 2 to 6 inches of snow across this general area. In their next update, they plan to lower that amount some.
