SNOW ENDING THIS EVENING: The light snow across Alabama ahead of the Arctic front will end this evening, followed by a clearing sky thanks to bone crushing subsidence.
TRAVEL: Be sure and scroll down for Jason’s post on travel problems… that graphic sums it all up nicely for tonight. In fact, here is that graphic below since so many people are interested in road conditions…
The air moving into Alabama is very dry… and despite the very cold air moving in tonight, the dry air and and sunshine over the next few days will make for much better driving conditions, even where snow is still thick across North Alabama. One way or another, use common sense and understand where you have any standing water, it will be all ice late tonight and tomorrow since we should drop into the upper teens by daybreak tomorrow.
TOMORROW-FRIDAY: Dry and very cold. That just about sums it up… lots of sunshine each day, with highs in the low 30s tomorrow and mid 30s on Thursday. Lows will be mostly in the teens… still looks like the coldest morning will come early Friday when we expect some single digit lows where snow is on the ground across the colder pockets of North Alabama. We finally begin to warm up a bit Friday afternoon with a high in the low to mid 40s.
THE WEEKEND: The warming trend continues as temperatures reach the 50s Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will feature ample sunshine, but clouds will begin to increase Sunday.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Still looks like periods of rain Monday and Tuesday… maybe even some thunder in spots, followed by a quick shot of very cold air at mid-week on Wednesday. The ECMWF seems to have a better grasp on the cold air; J.B. notes we have a 1059 MB high just off the northeast coast of Alaska and just off the Yukon territory; we all know that cold air will have to make a move, and no doubt we will get some of it by the middle of next week.
Later in the month the NAO trends positive, meaning the final week of January should be relatively mild if the pattern change is correct. That sure sounds good.
