HARD FREEZE AGAIN: Scroll down for a list of lows around Alabama this morning… I fully expect tomorrow morning to be colder with the Arctic high directly overhead. With a clear sky, calm wind, and snow pack, a number of the colder spots across North Alabama will be in the single digits at daybreak tomorrow. The GFS is still showing a low of 10 degrees for Birmingham; we figure most places will wind up somewhere between 10 and 15, with lows in the 6-9 degree range for the coldest spots with a snow cover. Yes, this is Alabama.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The long awaited thaw begins tomorrow afternoon as we rise into the low 40s with a sunny sky. Saturday will be another sunny day with a high in the balmy low 50s. The weather stays dry Sunday; the GFS backs the high to 48 with a bit of a wedge showing up. One way or another the weekend will be much warmer than recent days with a good deal of sunshine. A nice change to get out and get rid of the cabin fever so many of us have.

NEXT WEEK: Showers return to Alabama Monday and Tuesday. The 12Z GFS is a little more robust with the upper trough/cold front combo, suggesting a few thunderstorms could be involved Monday night and Tuesday. Then, we get a quick shot of colder air on Wednesday with highs dropping back down toward the 40 degree mark. Looks looks like the coldest air will be shunted to the north, and we warm up by the end of the week. Pretty painless compared to our weather over the past 4 days.

VOODOO LAND: The North Atlantic Oscillation moves into positive territory during the last week of January, suggesting our weather could be relatively mild for late month, perhaps into early February. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
