Big Time Alabama Igloo
We continue to get some amazing images from last week’s big snow event… see the now below and the pictures…
“James, we made a second igloo which is a fully complete 7 foot high by 13 foot wide (on the inside) real igloo here near by Hackleburg, AL where we got 7 inches of snow. The outside is 15 feet wide by 8 feet high. I would bet this is the largest igloo ever made in Alabama, maybe even the southeastern U.S. It’s totally made of snow and was built without any internal support the entire time. It was built just like the Inuits (Eskimos) build theirs, except we had to make our own snow blocks, the Inuits just cut their blocks out of giant wind packed snow drifts. It took over 3 miles of carrying around 200 blocks (about 75% of the blocks weighed 40 pounds each) and then lifting them in place. It took about 35 hours of work (Wedsday through Saturday) but we finally finished it late Saturday afternoon. It was made with just my little sister and I. We thought this might be the only chance we could build an actual true sized igloo ever in Alabama. We would like it if you put the picture of her on TV.
Today (right at noon Mon. Jan 17th) the top igloo roof finally collapsed in (as expected) with rain and temperatures near 50 degrees, and pretty much all the ground snow is melted at noon also, but the bottom igloo walls are still standing.
I thought up the idea of making a igloo right after the white Christmas storm when we got 4 inches of snow and I sent a picture to you of a small igloo we made which stayed at the bottom of the alabamawx blog for about 2 weeks before the Huge snow of January 9/10 2011. When the January 9/10 snow hit I noticed tons of people started sending in Igloo pictures to you and to our local news papers in Alabama. Maybe I started a somewhat of a trend in Alabama instead of just snowmen.”
