Soggy Tuesday
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
LIGHT RAIN AT TIMES: Clouds and occasional light rain will headline our forecast today. Most places will see 1/2 inch or less; the NAM is now printing only 0.06″, while the GFS is a little wetter with 0.18″. The high will be in the low to mid 50s.
QUICK CHANGES FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will feature a clearing sky, and we will be a little cooler with a high in the mid to upper 40s. But, on Thursday, we turn warmer with afternoon highs in the 56-60 degree range. We might see a little sun early Thursday, but clouds will thicken quickly by afternoon, and some rain could begin late in the day.
THURSDAY NIGHT: The approaching Arctic front combined with some decent upper support will bring rain to our state Thursday night, and potential for snow to the north over parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. Clearly the last few model runs have been drier, with rain amounts under 1/2 inch. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 06Z runs are not as bullish on the idea of freezing rain or snow flakes down this way as the cold air arrives after the deeper moisture is long gone.
We will still mention a chance of the rain tapering off to light snow as it ends, but no significant accumulation is expected down this way; any accumulation should be limited to far north Alabama, especially near the Tennessee border.
FRIDAY: Very cold air invades the state. Models show all precipitation long gone by daybreak Friday… we will still have to watch for icy spots on bridges due to the leftover moisture from the Thursday night rain, but with the lighter amounts hopefully we won’t have much of a problem. The sky will clear, but we won’t get past the mid 30s with an icy north wind.
OUR WEEKEND: We start the weekend with a hard freeze Saturday morning, with a low in the 14-19 degree range for most communities. Look for a sunny sky Saturday and Sunday; the high Saturday will be in the upper 30s, followed by mid to upper 40s Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: Model madness rules; the latest ECMWF shows a chance of some light rain Monday followed by much colder air Tuesday; the GFS keeps us dry Monday, followed by a big wet-down Tuesday. We will trend toward that GFS solution since the ECMWF looked that way yesterday. Bottom line is that the forecast for early next week is low confidence at best at this phase of the game.
VOODOO LAND: The operational runs of the global models continue to look cold through the end of January and into early February; see the Weather Xtreme video for the details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. This week’s new show is now available on iTunes and the web.
