Clouds increased across Central Alabama last night ahead of the next weather system – or the next two systems. One short wave trough will move across the Southeast US tonight bringing patchy light rain and some isolated showers to the area. I think the showers and much of rain will be over by Monday morning with clouds lingering. Today we’ll see warm temperatures once again – not as warm as yesterday, but still well above where what we usually see in late January with highs in the mid and upper 60s. Rain amounts with this first system will be relatively light with a quarter of an inch or less for most locations.

The main event will come on Tuesday and Tuesday night as a major trough kicks out of the Southwest US forming a surface low in the vicinity of the ARLATEX and moving northeast into the eastern Ohio River Valley by Wednesday. Moisture will be in place and dew points are expected to surge northward, but just how far is still in question. SPC has outlooked an area from Houston to Mobile and as far north as Jackson on Day 3 for possible severe weather. We should be in the warm sector so we’ll need to be keeping a close eye on the details to see if the threat of severe weather can push further northward.

This system brings rain and thunderstorms which should be easing out of here Wednesday morning as we begin to turn colder once again. This is not bringing Arctic air but will certainly feel very cold after the nice warmup we’ve seen this weekend. Rainfall with the storms Tuesday and Tuesday night could be in the 1 to 2 inch range with some potential for slightly higher amounts in stronger storms.

In the upper atmosphere, a piece of the trough hangs back bringing another threat for some showers or perhaps winter weather to the Southeast on Friday. At the moment the threat of winter weather seems minimal, but this will need a close eye, too, after we get rid of the main system on Tuesday.

We chill down for the first of the weekend, but the rapid changes to the upper air pattern suggests a quick warm up into early next week.

Voodoo country remains active with no let up in the traveling systems or the chill.

I had a wonderful time at the Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival yesterday. Lots of great stories. Slept in a little later than usual as a result of lots of laughter with the stories. James Spann will be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video first thing Monday morning. Godspeed.
