As James notes from time to time, there are never dull moments in the weather office. And the upcoming week will certainly attest to that.

TODAY: Look for a nice supply of sunshine though clouds will be increasing from the west this afternoon and into the overnight hours. It is going to be a relatively warm day with highs in the lower 50s – some spots might reach into the middle 50s. But a rapidly moving short wave coming out of the southern Rockies will bring rain to the area Monday.

MONDAY: Looks like primarily a rain event for us with a small window of opportunity for the rain to change over to or mix with light snow before ending in the afternoon. The precipitation should be light, so not expecting any kind of major rain event with only a quarter of an inch or so for most locales.

TUESDAY: We dry out but stay cool for Tuesday as we find ourselves between systems. It will remain cold with highs in the lower 40s – a good 10 degrees below where we would normally expect to be in early February.

WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY: Wednesday, another trough kicks out of the Rockies to bring a major winter weather system to the Central US once again. This one is not expected to be as major as the last one, but certainly poses some interesting forecast challenges. Looks like the precipitation will spread into Central Alabama during the night time hours late Wednesday and early Thursday. The GFS is not as serious with the cold air as the ECMWF is which is more aggressive with bringing that colder air further south. And the European has been doing a reasonably good job with the last several winter weather threats. While the precipitation could start briefly as rain, it appears likely that it will switch over to all snow during the early morning hours Thursday. This is much too far out to try to pinpoint amounts and locations, so suffice it to say that Central Alabama is likely to be under the gun for another winter event.

FRIDAY AND BEYOND: Due to the fast flow, the system moves out quickly with snow ending Thursday afternoon as we head for a dry weekend. It will remain fairly cold with the long wave trough still established over the eastern half of the US. This means that temperatures will remain well below seasonal values until well into voodoo country. And the GFS has been consistent over the last couple of days of projecting a warming trend for the eastern half of the country for mid February with a nice ridge. And the latest GFS run continues that, so perhaps we can look forward to some warmer days.
