Wednesday Night Snow Chances Looking Decent

It’s a nice day across Central Alabama today with temperatures warming into the 50s under mostly sunny skies.

We will deal with a disturbance that will bring some wet weather to us tomorrow. It could start as a little sleet toward daybreak, but should be mostly rain. There could be a brief changeover to a rain/snow mix late Monday afternoon in areas mainly east of I-65.

Skies will become mostly sunny on Tuesday, but it will remain cool, with highs in the middle 40s. Tuesday night will be cool again with lows in the 20s.

By Wednesday morning, a weakening upper trough will be swinging through Texas, spinning up a surface low in the Gulf of Mexico near Brownsville. Daytime highs will warm into the middle 40s across Central Alabama even as clouds arrive during the afternoon. A little sleet then rain will spread into the state by sunset. Here is where the details become important.

SNOW IN OUR FUTURE: The GFS, European and the Canadian are pretty consistent with the idea that the precipitation will quickly change to snow north of I-20 Wednesday evening, with a light snow continuing through the overnight hours.

The GFS is the weakest with the surface low and spottiest with the snowfall amounts, but the European has consistently been portraying a general light snowfall Wednesday night for areas north of I-20. It is too early to be specific on accumulations, but using this model information, one would expect around 1 inch of snow with some 2 inch amounts.

So, while we won’t totally trust things until we set the setup actually developing, there are decent indications there will likely be snowfall Wednesday night along and north of I-20. A rain snow mix will fall south to Montgomery.
