THIS AFTERNOON: The average high for March 1 in Birmingham is 62 degrees… and we are right at that mark at mid-afternoon. Temperatures are mostly in the 57-65 degree range over the northern half of the state with a cloudless sky and very low humidity.

REST OF THE WEEK: We stay dry through Thursday with a high near 70 tomorrow, followed by low 70s Thursday. Then, by Friday, we will see a general increase in clouds as moisture begins to return, and a few widely scattered showers could break out, but not a wash-out kind of thing.

STORMY WEEKEND: Another robust early spring weather system will impact the state over the weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details… the ECMWF remains the most aggressive model with instability and dynamic lift, suggesting a chance of severe thunderstorms for the northern half of Alabama late Saturday afternoon through Saturday night. The GFS has the better dynamics displaced to the north, but still suggests a chance of strong storms Saturday night. One way or another, it looks like the best chance of rain and storms over the weekend will come from about 4:00 p.m. Saturday through 9:00 a.m. Sunday. On the positive side of the ledger, some good rain seems likely, with amounts of one to two inches likely.

Sunday is looking noticeably colder… both global models are now suggesting we might have a hard time getting out of the 40s with a chilly north wind. The ECMWF hints at wrap around clouds for North Alabama Sunday, and maybe a little scattered light rain into the afternoon hours in the back wash around the departing storm system.

NEXT WEEK: We will also need to lower our forecast lows for Monday… sure looks now like a late season freeze is likely with most places winding up in the 25-35 degree range. We will be dry Monday and Tuesday, with the next chance of showers and storms around the middle of the week on Wednesday.
