Alabama Getting Wet–1:30 am Report

We need the rain and Alabama is getting a good dose.

Around 1:30 early on this Friday morning, it was raining over about 80% of Alabama–all but the Extreme Southeast.

This includes a rather broad area of heavy rain from north of Mobile northward into West Central and and Central Alabama. Moderate rain was occurring as far north as the Birmingham-Jasper area.

Based on radar estimates, as much as three inches has fallen over parts of Sumter County (West Central Alabama) and heavier amounts in Clarke and Wilcox County.

Almost no lightning. The air over most of Alabama is too stable thanks to our old, old friend, “the Wedge.” (cooler air pushing down the east coast and spreading into Alabama from the east) Temperatures are in the 50s over most of East and Central Alabama)

Atop Mt. Cheaha, it was a chilly 54 degrees with the mountain top in the clouds. The wind was east at 17 mph with gusts to 29 mph.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH
The NWS in Mobile has posted a Flash Flood Watch for parts of SE Mississippi and SW Alabama through Friday morning. In SW Alabama, it includes Choctaw, Washington and Clarke counties. An additional 3 to 5 inches of rain is possible. It is estimated that 5 to 8 inches has already fallen over parts of SE Mississippi

Look at these actual amounts earlier over SE Louisiana:

6.80 inches in New Orleans (Audubon Park)
4.12 at New Orleans (Lakefront)
4.30 at New Orleans (Armstrong International Airport)

I am on vacation this week. We have seven warm bodies spending the night tonight including one extra dog. As a result, I had to rent my ex-recliner back from Little Miss Molly. I am living in it for a few days and happened to wake up and decided to do a little blogging. As they say, weather gets in your blood like printers ink in a newspaper man.

AN UNRELATED NOTE
In heavily snow-covered Denver it was 24 degrees and not far away in Loveland, 14 degrees.
