WARM EARLY SPRING DAYS: What a beautiful weekend we enjoyed… lots of sunshine and the high in Birmingham was a warm 84 degrees both days. No reason for any change today and tomorrow; mostly sunny with a high in the low to mid 80s as the upper ridge holds. MOS guidance remains a little too cool… we figure most places will wind up in the 81-85 degree range today and tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: A short wave will pass well to the north of Alabama at mid-week and the trailing cold front will bring the risk of showers late Wednesday and Wednesday night, but rain should be light, no severe weather is expected, and most places probably won’t even get any thunder. Pretty tame for a March cold front. Drier air moves back into the state Thursday, and temperatures will drop only slightly as the coldest air remains to the north.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday looks like a very nice day with ample sunshine and a high in the mid 70s following a morning low in the low to mid 40s. We should start the weekend with a warm, dry day Saturday with a high not too far from the 80 degree mark, but a rather dynamic storm system is poised to bring showers and storms to the state as the weekend winds down. We will have to look at the timing closely, but at this point it looks like the main threat of showers and storms will come Sunday night, but I sure can’t rule out a shower somewhere as early as Sunday afternoon.

Initial guidance also hints that we could very well see strong to severe storms with this system Sunday night with excellent upper support and good instability. The rain ends Monday morning, and we turn cooler as the high drops into the 60s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We might see a touch of frost by Tuesday or Wednesday morning of next week, but the 00Z operational GFS shows the next chance of a freeze around April 2-3. No way to be specific, of course, at this stage of the game, but I still believe we have one more freeze to go this season. The forecast negative NAO at the end of March and the beginning of April has been suggesting this possibility for a while as well.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Tonight’s Guest WeatherBrain is Sean Casey. He is the IMAX filmmaker who produced the Tornado Alley film that is now playing at the McWane Center. Listen liven at 8:30 p.m. CDT on UStream or after the show is posted around 11 p.m. on the web or iTunes.
