Watching The Weekend Storm System

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

I know most folks are out shopping or eating leftover Turkey today, but I know there is lots of interest in the weekend weather system that will impact Alabama in a big way. You can watch the video for the details, but here are the important points:

*Overrunning rain will become widespread tomorrow night across Alabama as warm, moist air rides up and over a shallow layer of colder air near the surface. The 12Z models are a little slow with the onset of the rain, meaning there is some chance the rain could arrive after the completion of the Iron Bowl, but that is only a chance. We will forecast a cold rain beginning during the game with temperatures in the 40s.

*A warm front will move slowly northward across Alabama Sunday, meaning more showers and storms. Most of the state should be in the warm sector by late Sunday night.

*The main upper trough and cold front will sweep through here on Monday. The 12Z GFS has the cold front along I-65 at midday Monday, while the NAM still has front just entering Northwest Alabama. Bottom line is that it looks more and more like the primary severe weather threat will come on Monday. The models are showing only a limited amount of instability, but plenty of helicity. We believe the upward motion offered by the storm system will offset the limited instability, and there could be a threat of tornadoes on Monday. We will continue to watch developments closely over the weekend to see how the mesoscale features line up. Be watching the blog for updates.

*The weather looks dry on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, but a cold front will bring a chance of showers on Thursday, followed by a shot of cold air.

*The period December 2-9 looks very active with a couple of significant weather systems and shots of very cold air. Looks like a very interesting time in the forecast office.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend. Sure great to see Coach Croom get the big win in Starkville today… he was very emotional at the end of the game. I went to high school with Sylvester, and if anyone deserves this kind of turnaround season, he is the guy. Congratulations to all of the Bulldogs… time to go bowling.

We will have updates on the blog over the weekend, of course… my next scheduled Weather Xtreme video will be posted Monday morning at 7:00 a.m…. weather permitting!
