Nice Weekend but a Quick Rain Still Coming

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

Looks like Central Alabama is in store for another great weekend with just a small part of it clipped off for some rain chances. And yesterday, being the last day of November, ended the 2007 hurricane season. Bill Murray has a post below summarizing the events. There were 14 names storms this year compared with an average of about 10. Two of those were intense which was significant since they occurred nearly back-to-back. And only two storms affected the United States, both relatively minor thank goodness.

I also noted that yesterday was the 260th day in 2007 with no measurable rain in Central Alabama, specifically Birmingham. I think that means that 78 percent of 2007 so far has been rainless.

Today and much of Sunday will be great days to enjoy – perhaps a little leaf raking – or NOT!! But it will be warm as we achieve highs about 10 degrees above typical values for early December. But the frontal system that is approaching promises to move through quickly.

It looks like our best chances for rain will come from about mid-afternoon through very early morning. By mid-day on Monday, the cold front has zipped through and should be located along the Gulf coast and into the Atlantic. But that will set the stage for a very blustery Monday with brisk northwest wind and temperatures that could be falling during the daytime. And we’re not likely to see anything higher that the middle or upper 50s at best. Because the front will zip through so fast the rainfall we see is likely to be a half inch or less.

The weather turns dry once again and is expected to stay that way through the next weekend. A new deep closed low develops over Southern California and Northern Mexico by the end of the week, but our weather stays seasonal and dry.

According to the latest GFS model run, we won’t see a significant chance for rain until the 12th or 13th, but that is pretty deep into voodoo country, so I wouldn’t be pinning any serious hope to that just yet. And the GFS does show an interesting pattern around the 16th with a Gulf low – interesting but not something I’m going to start plugging just yet. I’ll watch – and maybe hope a little.

Thanks so much for tuning in to the Weather Xtreme Video. I’ll have the next edition posted around 8:30 am or so Sunday morning. I hope you have a great weekend. God bless.
