THIS AFTERNOON: While Alabama is warm and dry, tornado watches cover the region from Northeast Texas to Central Illinois, where SPC has a moderate risk of severe weather in place. We expect thunderstorms to explode in intensity during the next few hours in these two watch areas. Around here, warm air aloft will keep Alabama rain-free this evening.

The storms to the northwest will evolve into a squall line late tonight, and that line will approach Northwest Alabama during the pre-dawn hours tomorrow. The storms should be in a weakening phase by the time they are near Muscle Shoals, but SPC has the northwest corner of Alabama in a slight risk for this.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: SPC has much of North and Central Alabama in a standard “slight risk” for tomorrow afternoon due to the potential for new thunderstorm development along and south of a cold front that will be going nearly stationary over North Alabama. The good news is that the primary upper dynamics will be well to the northeast, so it won’t be anything like last Friday. But, a few storms could be strong with the primary risk coming from hail and gusty winds. The storms will weaken tomorrow evening as the sun sets.

We will maintain the risk of thunderstorms Thursday, with the most concentrated ones over the northern third of the state as the old front begins to lift northward as a warm front.

FRIDAY AND THE EASTER WEEKEND: The weather looks very warm and dry. In fact, it will feel more like the Fourth of July instead of Easter with afternoon highs well up into the 80s each day with a decent amount of sunshine after some early morning clouds each day. The upper ridge should keep most of Alabama high and dry, although a shower could pop up in a few spots during the afternoon. The chance of getting wet for now is so small that we won’t mention it in the forecast.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like we could see an issue with strong to severe storms by the middle of next week… see the Weather Xtreme video for more details on long range ideas.
