Weather Verging on Hot Ahead

Looks like the weather will be verging on hot for the next 5 days or so as a combination of a surface high pressure system and an upper ridge will keep us dry and warm. The ridge that is just to our west this morning will move eastward and strengthen bringing several warm – maybe hot – days along with dry condition. Highs will be in the 80s today and Monday, but by Tuesday into Thursday we could see temperatures climb to the 90-degree mark or perhaps just a tad higher than that.

The ridge will be with us through Thursday, but beginning Thursday, a strong short wave/closed low will come out of the southern Rockies and weaken the ridge. The GFS is suggesting that the ridge will break down enough on Friday to allow a weak front to move through Alabama. Rain chances do not appear to be very high with this as I expect scattered showers. In the upper atmosphere, a closed low sets up over the Ohio River Valley with several short waves dumbbell-ing around the closed low. We don’t see a complete air mass change, however, the weak front could bring slightly drier air to the region with temperatures dropping back into the 80s.

Rainfall amounts are likely to be small and widely spaced. And for now it looks like a fairly nice weekend with only very small chances for showers.

The severe weather focus for the next few days remains well to our northwest and west. See the Weather Xtreme Video for the specific graphics from SPC.

The closed low over the Ohio River Valley will be with us into next week which will help to keep the forecast challenging. But the ridge is forecast to return around the 22nd or 23rd providing us with the potential for some rather warm days toward the end of May.

Sorry I missed the Weather Xtreme Video yesterday. My wife and I were docking at Mobile after a visit to the Yucatan Peninsula aboard the Carnival Ship Elation. We had a great time and the weather was nearly perfect. The only shower we saw for the entire 5-day cruise was in the Gulf on Friday morning. Happy Mothers Day and Godspeed.
