THIS AFTERNOON: How about this sampling of temperatures around the state at 2:00…

Haleyville 57
Muscle Shoals 58
Gadsden 61
Birmingham 62
Tuscaloosa 63
Anniston 63

Keep in mind our average high for May 16 is 81… so we are running about 20 degrees below average for mid-May. Clouds continue to hover across the state, and we note a few showers near the Georgia border under a cold core upper low that is east of Alabama.

TOMORROW: The upper air pattern over North America is really like a traffic jam… an omega block means that the changes will be slow in coming, so I am not sure tomorrow will be much different than today. We will play it optimistic in the forecast can go for a “partly sunny” sky tomorrow, but don’t be shocked if the clouds hang tough, especially over the eastern counties of the state. And, we stay cool with a high in the 60s.

WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: A warming trend headlines the forecast as the upper pattern breaks down, and a ridge begins to build across the Gulf Coast states. We will see a good supply of sunshine each day, with low 70s Wednesday, low 80s Thursday, and mid to upper 80s Friday as the weather finally feels like May again.

OUR WEEKEND: The 12Z GFS confirms the idea of the upper ridge holding, meaning the weekend should be very warm and dry. Look for highs in the 86-90 degree range, with partly sunny days and fair nights. The weekend will also be rather humid, and I guess a rogue shower could pop up somewhere Sunday afternoon during the peak of the daytime heating process, but the chance looks so small now it isn’t worth the mention in the forecast.

LONG RANGE: The GFS hints our next decent rain event could be in the May 26-27 time frame… see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
