* 600 is the number of square miles of Arizona that has been burned over as their current huge wild fire approaches an all time state record. A number of homes and farm buildings destroyed in the raging fire.

* 7% was the relative humidity at El Paso at daybreak today. Just one example how bone dry the air is over the SW USA.

* 47 is the expected low in Minneapolis tonight. Only a few days ago, the old thermometer soared to a record high of 102 along with south winds gusting to 30 mph! We can’t even buy a cubic yard of cool air. It was 78 in Birmingham at 7 am. Chance of a cooling shower today is nil–maybe a better chance about Saturday.

* 0.00 (zip!) is the rain total so far in June at Birmingham Airport. There were a few light showers over West Jefferson County early today but not at the Airport

* 6.53 inches is the rain shortfall so far this year at Tuscaloosa. That is serious. The shortage at Anniston is 5.18 inches. No measurable rain at Anniston Airport so far in June but last night, DeArmanville, not far east of Anniston, was drenched with some heavy showers!

* 97 is the average daily high so far this month at Muscle Shoals. Their “coolest” day was June 1 with a high of 95. The coolest day so far this month at Anniston Airport was a high of 95 on the 7th.

* 0.00 (zip) is the total rain amount at Birmingham Airport so far this month. 97.7 has been the average daily high temperature so far.

* 28 was the (coolest) (coldest) in Alaska this morning. Warmest yesterday was 68 at Ruby. Ever heard of Ruby, Alaska? Do you know where it is? (your geography quiz for today!)

* 20 inches is how much snow was on the ground in Tulsa County, Oklahoma back on February 2. (using that fact as a flashback to cool us off) PS: It doesn’t work!

* 17 is the average number of days it rains in Yuma, Ariz., each year, making it the least rainy city in the USA.

* 1 to 2 feet of snow falls each year in Hawaii but there is a catch. Is is all above 5,000 feet elevation and mainly on the Big Island Summits!

*0.02 is the average amount of rain each year at Mawsynram Assam, India. It is considered the driest spot on earth. (Please don’t ask me how to pronounce it) (Hint: There are a few other places that claim the same “honor”, such as the northern most town in the western desert of Chile.

* Aswan, Egypt also gets only 0.02 per year. No Flash Flood Warnings for them.

* 95 was the high in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., yesterday and 89 in Binghampton. A very hot 97 at NYC/LGA Airport. Numerous reports of large hail in many parts of the state.

* Only three cups of coffee so far today even though a certain little animal had me up before sunrise.

* Next week I want to write a story on JB’s Journal about our very first weather radar at Birmingham Airport and how that compares to today!

Outta here…
