THIS AFTERNOON: The radar is relatively quiet across our state at mid-afternoon, and temperatures are generally in the low to mid 90s. The MCS (mesoscale convective system) north of Alabama is fizzling out over Tennessee, but they will be laying down a boundary or two, and a few storms could still fire up during the next few hours over North Alabama, where SPC maintains a slight risk of severe weather for this possibility. Storm development this evening will all depend on the strength of the “cap”, or a layer of warm air aloft that prevents showers and convection from forming.

REST OF THE WEEK: With the core of the heat ridge a little west of Alabama, a persistence forecast seems to be the best course for now. Partly sunny, hot, hazy days with highs in the low to mid 90s and the daily risk of widely spaced showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. We will also keep an eye on organized storm development northwest of Alabama that might try and move in here at some point.

WEEKEND PEEK: Not much change for Saturday, but the upper ridge gets stronger Sunday, which should mean the heat level will rise a bit, and the chance of a cooling storm will get even smaller.

LONG RANGE: Temperatures should remain above average for the rest of June, although the GFS continues the idea of a general weakness in the upper ridge in the June 24-27 time frame, with some hint of tropical mischief in the Gulf of Mexico. Best possibly situation for us would be a tropical depression or weak tropical storm in the Gulf that would move north and give us a general soaking.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
