CALM MORNING: Temperatures are mostly in the 68-73 degree range across Alabama this morning… Gadsden is one of the cooler spots with 66. The sky is generally clear.

We note SPC has a slight risk of severe weather defined later today and early tonight for the northern third of Alabama; this is due to a short wave passing north of the state, beating down the heat ridge ever so slightly and opening the door for an increase in the number of showers and storms this afternoon. But, you know the deal, the storms will be scattered, and many neighborhoods will remain just hot and dusty. But, where the the storms do form, look for lots of lightning, and potential for small hail and localized areas of strong winds. The storms will die off once the sun goes down.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: We will maintain the risk of scattered storms tomorrow and Friday, but they should be fewer in number as temperatures aloft warm a bit. Then, storms become pretty isolated over the weekend as the ridge continues to strengthen. Highs will remain generally in the mid 90s, although some upper 90s could show up over West Alabama by Saturday and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The general pattern won’t be changing with temperatures staying above average, but the GFS continues to suggest the Gulf could become active with potential for a little tropical mischief. And, with a weakness in the ridge showing up later in the month, just maybe the door will open up for a decent tropical rain event along the way… something we really need. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
