HIT AND MISS STORMS: Other that a cluster of showers and storms over Cullman, Winston, and Walker Counties, the bulk of the showers and storms on radar today are in a broad zone from the Mississippi Delta down to Alabama’s Gulf Coast. These storms fired up on the outflow boundary from last night’s thunderstorm complex over East Alabama.

Temperatures are hot, but a few degrees lower than yesterday. In fact, Gadsden reports only 88 degrees at 3:00… other observations include 91 at Anniston, and a hot 97 degrees at Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: There is always some risk of an afternoon storm in a hot summer pattern like this, but storms should become few and far between over the weekend as the upper ridge grows stronger across the Gulf Coast states. Heat levels will rise, with afternoon highs in the 96-100 degree range likely during this three day stretch.

NEXT WEEK: While the weather still looks hot and mostly dry Monday through Wednesday (only very isolate afternoon storms), the ridge begins to break down on Thursday and Friday, and with an increase in tropical moisture the door is open for scattered showers and storms to become more numerous, along with decreasing heat levels. In fact, the GFS continues to hint at some type of tropical wave moving up into the Central Gulf Coast in the June 25-26 time frame (that following weekend). A good tropical rain event is just what the doctor ordered for Alabama; let’s hope it happens.
