BELOW NINETY! I have often written about our inability to handle summer convection… the coverage and placement of the usual airmass storms we see during the afternoon and evening hours, and the occasional MCS that moves down here in a northwest flow aloft, like we saw this morning. I sure didn’t expect that one to stay intact that long, and models had no clue. But, it was all good with some beneficial rain for many places, and a welcomed break from the heat.

Based on the hourly observations… Birmingham’s high today is 84 degrees, which was reached right before 11:00. The last time we had a high under 90 was back on May 27. So… the streak has ended at 20 days.

THIS AFTERNOON: Rain continues at 3:15 south of a line from Anniston to Montgomery… the sky has become partly sunny over Northwest Alabama in the wake of the morning MCS. Temperatures are generally in the 80s, with 70s where rain is falling.

THE WEEKEND: Don’t worry, the heat will return quickly. While the ridge will grow stronger, there is evidence that we will need to continue some risk of a passing storm tomorrow, especially over East Alabama. Then, Sunday looks just hot and dry statewide as the heat bubble covers all of Alabama. The high should be in the mid 90s; the added soil moisture we picked up today should help to shave a few degrees off the temperatures we originally expected.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks generally hot and dry Monday and Tuesday with highs in the mid 90s. But, the heat ridge breaks down again by Thursday and Friday, and with increasing deep tropical moisture the door is open for a general increase in the number of showers and storms along with decreasing heat levels. And, the GFS continues the idea of some kind of tropical low forming late in the week over the western Gulf of Mexico.
