STILL VERY HOT TODAY: Not sure today will be much different than yesterday… when Tuscaloosa soared to 101 degrees. Birmingham’s high was 99, and most other spots around here were in the 95-100 degree range. The upper ridge will keep us dry with similar afternoon highs.

TO THE WEST: A very deep upper trough will set the stage for a significant severe weather threat for the High Plains today, and that trough will help to beat down the heat ridge down here, promising to bring a pattern of rising rain chances and lowered heat levels through the latter half of the week.

We will bring in some risk of a thunderstorm by mid to late afternoon tomorrow, but we will forecast scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Wednesday through Friday. The sky will be cloudy at times, and afternoon highs will drop into the 87-91 degree range thanks to the clouds and showers. We all know the rain distribution isn’t very even on summer days, but during that three day stretch there is a pretty good chance most all Alabama neighborhoods will see at least one good downpour or two.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Not much change for the weekend. The weather will remain unsettled with a weakness in the upper ridge overhead, and a stalled surface front to the north. A pretty decent chance of a few showers and storms Saturday and Sunday with a high not too far from 90.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The core of the heat will be west of Alabama next week, meaning the door will be open for the occasional MCS to ease down here in the northwest flow aloft. Temperatures should be near average for summer, with highs in the low 90s at least for the first half of the week.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin and tropical storm formation is not expected in the short term.

SUMMER SOLSTICE: Summer officially begins tomorrow at 12:16 p.m. CDT. After tomorrow, we begin to lose the amount of daylight on a daily basis until the winter solstice just before Christmas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. This week’s show features a visit with the famous storm chasing couple Jeff and Kathryn Piotrowski. They will talk about their chasing experiences, including an emotion rendezvous with the Joplin tornado. We record the show tonight at 8:30 p.m. CDT if you want to listen to the live stream.
