HOTTER AFTERNOONS: After a very nice break from the summer heat over the past few days, the 90s are set to return to Alabama over the weekend as the upper ridge begins to rebuild. And, accordingly, showers and thunderstorms will become fewer in number as well. We are projecting a high near 90 today with a mix of sun and clouds. The chance of any one spot seeing a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon is about one in three, with the best chance coming from about 2:00 until 9:00 p.m.

The weather over the weekend will be very similar. Partly sunny, hot days with a few scattered showers and storms around each afternoon. Highs will ease up into the 91-94 degree range, with afternoon thunderstorms becoming a little more widely spaced.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge will help to push highs into the mid 90s for a good chunk of next week, with only widely scattered showers and storms around each afternoon. The GFS continues to develop a tropical low in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico, with a general motion toward the mouth of the Rio Grande by mid to late week. This should bring some beneficial rain to far South Texas and northern Mexico if the forecast track is correct, but we all know that could change (and probably will). We will keep an eye on it.

LONG RANGE: At this point we are looking at pretty routine summer weather for the Independence Day weekend. Hot humid days, with some risk of a passing afternoon shower or storm in spots. Highs in the 90s; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
