STRONG STORMS OVER NORTH ALABAMA: SPC maintains a severe thunderstorm watch for much of North Alabama… basically for areas along and north of I-20, through 9:00 p.m. CDT. Strong to severe storms continue to impact the broad area from Hamilton to Decatur to Huntsville to Fort Payne. We actually had a rare June tornado warning issued by the NWS office in Huntsville a little earlier… scroll down for details.

The main threat from the storms over North Alabama this evening will come from hail, wet microbursts (localized areas of high wind sufficient to knock down trees and power lines), and gobs of very dangerous cloud to ground lightning. The storms should develop southward, and could impact Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden within the next few hours. The intensities will fall off quickly once the sun goes down later this evening.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: The classic summer mix of sun, heat, humidity, and storms is the story. Routine summer weather as the heat ridge rebuilds. Partly sunny hot days, and the risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the afternoon and evening hours. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and Sunday is about one in three, and like the storms today, where they do form they could be strong. Highs over the weekend should be mostly in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: No sign of any serious change for much of next week. Heat levels creep up a bit into the mid 90s Monday through Wednesday as the upper ridge strengthens, and each day we will have the risk of “widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”.

The 12Z GFS has backed off on the idea of a tropical low forming over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico, but don’t be surprised if it shows up again on future runs. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range and tropical details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
