BLINDING RAIN AND SOME FLOODING: Many reports of flooding have come in from the Birmingham metro area within the past 30 minutes due to the storm complex slowly moving south through the city. Several water rescues are in progress now as reported by Birmingham Fire and Rescue. There has been some wind damage in Trussville, and all storms are producing remarkable amounts of lightning.

Other storms are across North-Central Alabama… and all of them are producing lots of rain and gusty winds along with vivid lightning.

These storms will die down later this evening.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: The upper ridge will continue to weaken a bit, opening the door for scattered to numerous showers and storms on a daily basis through the weekend. Some spots will receive more than two inches of rain over the next five days, and like today, the storms will be strong where they form during the afternoon hours. Heat levels will continue to come down thanks to the clouds and showers, with highs near 90. Some places could very well fail to reach 90 where showers form early in the day.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge gets a little stronger by Monday and Tuesday, and for now fairly routine summer weather is likely much of next week, with highs in the low to mid 90s along with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms each afternoon.

TROPICS: All remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect about 3-5 hours of sunshine through Friday with scattered to numerous showers and storms. The weekend will be a little brighter with 5-7 hours of sun as the storms become more widely spaced. Highs will be in the upper 80s through Friday on the coast, with low 90s over the weekend.

I enjoyed speaking at the Western Division/Alabama Power safety meeting today in Tuscaloosa at Central High School. Drove down 15th Street for the first time since April 27… it was a very moving experience.
