WET AT TIMES: This should be the day with the best coverage of showers and thunderstorms for our state thanks to an approaching front from the north. Of course, this is summer, so some folks will be left out, but most communities have a decent chance of getting wet at times with occasional showers and storms. Some of the storms will pack a punch; SPC maintains a slight severe weather risk for much of Alabama and the adjacent states today… the main risk will come from wet microbursts.

Heat won’t be much of a factor today with highs in the 87-91 degree range. Showers and storms will fade away this evening.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: Drier air moves into North Alabama tomorrow, but the models are not as dry on recent runs. Looks like we will need to mention some risk of a shower tomorrow afternoon mainly for areas south and west of Birmingham.

The 00Z GFS shows another MCS potentially moving into the state Thursday night, followed by a dry day on Friday.

Long time readers here know that we are simply not very good with dealing with summer convection across the Deep South, so we will have to watch for surprises. But, generally speaking, the latter half of the week should be a little drier than recent days. Highs will be in the low 90s, but the lower humidity should make the heat a little more comfortable.

OUR WEEKEND: We will mention the chance of scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday; some hint that the convection could be a little more widespread Sunday thanks to another approaching front. Then, drier air moves into the state early next week. But, we all know that pushes of really dry air aren’t very common in August, but we will continue the idea of lowered POPs (probability of precipitation) Monday and Tuesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

TROPICS: A blob of convection is over the Central Atlantic, the remnants of Emily. That is moving northeast and won’t bother anybody, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Nothing out of the ordinary in coming days… look for about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with the daily opportunity of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be close to 90, and the sea water temperatures remain generally in the upper 80s.
