FRESH BREEZE: How about this 2:00 observation for Birmingham…

Hard to believe it is the middle of August. A number of cooler pockets across North Alabama were in the 50s this morning; coolest observation I saw was 56 from our Skywatcher in Remlap, in Blount County. Most places are in the mid 80s this afternoon.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: If anything, temperatures tomorrow morning will be even a few degrees cooler. We might even hear of some low 50s across the valleys of Northeast Alabama. The sky will stay mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the upper 80s as dry, continental air remains in place.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: After all, this is August in Alabama, so we expect a slow rise in heat and humidity levels with highs back in the low 90s, and some risk of afternoon showers. Moisture will be limited, so any showers should be pretty widely spaced, and widespread rain is not expected. All in all a benign weather pattern.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Gert is in the Atlantic, just east of Bermuda, packing sustained winds of 60 mph. This storm is moving northeast, and is no threat to land.

A tropical wave is moving through the Leeward/Windward Islands this afternoon, and will be moving into the Caribbean. Watch the Weather Xtreme video, and you will see some of the tropical models do pick up on this feature and move it in the general direction of Jamaica in a few days. And, a number of the intensity models ramp it up to hurricane strength. Remains to be seen if this will ultimately become a threat to the Gulf of Mexico, or be influenced by the mean upper trough over the eastern U.S. with a turn to the north. We will keep an eye on it.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Again, check out the Weather Xtreme video and you will note the 12Z GFS shows the first “voodoo” hurricane of the season striking the Louisiana coast in late August. It is what it is, and the next run will probably show nothing. But, there are clear signs the MJO phase will favor an uptick in tropical activity during the last two weeks of August, so we will keep an eye for consistency in model output.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We record this week’s show tonight at 8:30 CDT… our guest will be Andrew Oldaker Creator of SimuAwips, along with John Huntington as we discuss the Indiana State Fair Stage Collapse this weekend. You can listen live via LiveStream here.
