BENIGN SUMMER WEATHER: After a couple of pleasant days, heat and humidity levels will slowly rise, but the heat won’t get out of hand. We are looking at highs mostly in the low 90s, with mid 90s in spots, tomorrow through the weekend with partly sunny, hazy days and fair nights. Due to the higher low level moisture levels, of course, nights won’t be as cool.

We won’t mention any rain tomorrow, but a few isolated showers or thunderstorms could show up Thursday and Friday, primarily during the peak of the daytime heating process. Nothing widespread, and highs should hold in the 90-94 degree range.

And, for the weekend, no serious change. Highs will stay between 90 and 94, and any afternoon showers and thunderstorms should be widely spaced. Very routine weather for mid-August in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 12Z GFS is advertising another eastern U.S. upper trough early next week, which drives another front down this way; this could mean a decent chance of showers and storms late Monday or Monday night, followed by drier air Tuesday and Wednesday with lower humidity and cooler nights.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Gert is making the transformation to a sub-tropical, high latitude system in the North Atlantic, and is no threat to land. The wave in the Caribbean is moving to the west, and has shown a slow increase in convective activity today. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for the model graphics; most of them push this one toward Central America, or the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico by Thursday night. Doesn’t seem to be a candidate for problems up this way (the Central Gulf Coast).

VOODOO LAND: The 12Z GFS continues the idea of a tropical system moving through the Florida Straights and into the Gulf of Mexico later this month, with landfall near Buras, Louisiana around August 28. Nothing but wild speculation, of course, but there has certainly been some consistency in model output. The ECMWF is not signing the same tune, which is to be expected at such a long range. We will keep an eye on trends.
