ANOTHER COMFORTABLE MORNING: Another pretty pleasant August morning… our Skywatcher up in Northeast Etowah County is reporting 57 degrees at 5:00… Valley Head and Crossville are at 59. Most of the official reporting stations are in the low to mid 60s…. not bad at all for mid August in Alabama.

We actually have a few “illegal” showers over West Alabama this morning that came out of nowhere; those are moving to the south, and it looks like they will stay generally west of U.S. 43 and fade away within the next hour or so. Otherwise, the day will be partly sunny today with high up in the low 90s as the heat levels begin to rise a bit.

REST OF THE WEEK: As low level moisture increases, we will mention a slight risk of a shower tomorrow, and a few widely scattered showers Friday afternoon. But, the rain won’t be widespread and many places will stay dry. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the 90 to 94 degree range.

WEEKEND FORECAST: No real change. Partly sunny, hot days with a few widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. The 00Z GFS hints the moisture could be a little deeper Sunday; highs remain in that 90-94 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Another upper trough forms over the eastern U.S., and it should drive a surface front into Alabama late Monday night or Tuesday, with an enhancement of showers and storms. Then, another surge of dry, continental air should work into the state by Tuesday night and Wednesday. The core of the seriously hot weather remains well to the west.

TROPICS: The tropical wave south of Hispaniola has potential to become Tropical Storm Harvey in coming days. It will move west into Central America in about 72 hours, and for now does not look like a candidate to be a Gulf of Mexico storm.

Out in the land of voodoo, the GFS is very persistent in the idea of a tropical system (Irene?) coming up through the Florida Straights and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico in about 10 days; watch the Weather Xtreme video for the latest ideas. That remains pure speculation, but the consistency has been there for sure in recent days.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
