Only Isolated Showers/Storms

HOT AFTERNOONS: Looks like we will be up in the low to mid 90s on a daily basis through the weekend as hot August weather returns to Alabama after our nice break earlier this week (we all knew that was going to happen). Expect hot hazy days with a partly sunny sky through Sunday, and each day we will mention only isolated showers and thunderstorms. However, we are in a northwest flow aloft, and that can bring a surprise thunderstorm mass down this way at times. Synoptic scale models really don’t handle this well, so we just have to keep an eye on radar. Bottom line is that fairly routine, benign summer weather is the story through the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Unfortunately the 00Z GFS has backed off on the idea of a surface front early next week with an enhanced risk of showers and storms Monday or Tuesday; watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see it actually looks pretty dry with little day to day change. Bottom line is that for the moment prospects for widespread rain don’t look good for the next 7 days or so.

TROPICS: The wave in the Caribbean has a chance of becoming Tropical Storm Harvey before moving into Central America tomorrow. No threat to the Gulf.

The wave over the Central Atlantic is the one to watch; the GFS continues to develop this into a significant tropical system, and pushes it to the southern tip of Florida in about a week, followed by a turn to the north, coming up through Tampa Bay and into Georgia (see the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics). Of course, this remains in voodoo land, but the idea of this system actually getting on the board is very credible. Whether it recurves off the East Coast, or tries to move up into the eastern Gulf remains to be seen. Very few runs have shown this west of Alabama in recent days, meaning we most likely would be on the dry side of the system.
