NOT MUCH RAIN FOR A WHILE: Alabama’s weather today will remain sunny with a high in the 90s. Tomorrow will bring the risk of isolated showers and storms thanks to a dying front approaching from the north, but you all know when you say isolated that means most places won’t get wet. The chance of your front yard seeing some rain tomorrow afternoon is only about one in eight, so don’t get too excited. I guess a speck or two is also possible on radar Friday, mainly south of I-20, but most places stay dry.

OUR WEEKEND: While Irene runs just off the East Coast, Alabama sees the northerly flow on the west side of the circulation, meaning sunny weather Saturday and Sunday. Heat levels will come down a bit with a high around 90 both days, along with lower humidity values.

NEXT WEEK: Still no sign of any really significant rain event, at least for the first half of the week. Highs will hold mostly in the low to mid 90s…. this is August in Alabama, after all.

IRENE: The best blend of computer models continues to keep Irene just off the East Coast of the U.S. It will flirt with the Outer Banks of North Carolina Saturday night, and with Cape Cod Sunday night or Monday morning, but it remains to be seen if the center will be close enough to land for any serious wind/flood threat. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details and graphics.

Irene looks very impressive on satellite images this morning, and is expected to become a category three hurricane later today as it moves through the Bahamas. Irene should remain a hurricane as it scoots past the Outer Banks, but will be weakening as it approaches Cape Cod.

Elsewhere, there is a tropical wave in the far eastern Atlantic with potential for development, but this is expected to move northeast over the open ocean and seems to be no threat to land.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
