Classes on weather at Jeff State this fall
Many of you likely received the mailer, but in case you didn’t (or threw it away as junk mail), I will be teaching 2 non-credit (just for fun, learning) classes this fall at Jeff State on meteorology.
One is called “Severe Weather and Tornadoes”. It will meet for 3 hours on one night, and costs $29. We will cover instability, helicity, bow echoes, microbursts, tornadoes, Doppler radar, and have a discussion on tornado safety. It meets at the Shelby campus 9/19, and the Carson Rd campus 9/26, both at 6 pm.
The other class is more comprehensive, and meets Tuesday and Thursday nights 6-8 for 4 weeks. The cost is $149. Topics include 1. Meteorological variables and their measurement, 2. Forces acting on the atmosphere (pressure gradient, Coriolis, solar radiation, etc.), 3. Air masses and fronts, 4. Weather systems (upper-level disturbances, surface lows and highs, etc.), 5. Clouds and precipitation, 6. Major weather systems (severe weather, hurricanes, and snowstorms), 7. Atmospheric remote sensing (Doppler and dual-pol radar, satellites, wind profilers, etc.), and also have a general forum where anyone can ask anything about weather.
To register, go to https://www.jeffstateonline.com/CCCE/index.aspx, or call 856-7710. The classes will be non-mathematical and suited for everyone! It will be fun, and you will learn a lot.
