THIS AFTERNOON: While most of Alabama is dry, we do note a few isolated showers and storms over West Alabama this afternoon, generally along and west of Alabama Highway 17, or near the Mississippi border. These storms are showing little movement. And, to the west, a rather large MCS is dropping south over Louisiana, Arkansas, and East Texas.

Temperatures across our state are mostly in the mid 90s at 3:00… although Tuscaloosa is hotter again today with 99.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: A weakening surface front will move into North Alabama tomorrow, and could very well kick off a few isolated showers and thunderstorms by afternoon. SPC has low end severe weather probabilities (5 percent) over North/Central Alabama as some of the storms, where they do form, will be strong. But again, most of the state won’t get rain.

Guess we probably need to hold on to some risk of isolated showers Friday as the front stalls and dissipates, but the chance of any one place getting wet Friday will be only about one in ten.

OUR WEEKEND: Still looks like the heat backs off a bit Saturday and Sunday with highs at or just over 90 with lower humidity values, and lows in the 60s. The sky should be sunny both days. We can thank Hurricane Irene for pulling that air down in here from the north; Irene will remain well east of Alabama just off the East Coast of the U.S.

NEXT WEEK: Still no sign of any really significant chance of rain Monday and Tuesday, although some moisture begins to move in from the east on Wednesday. Highs hold in the low to mid 90s.

IRENE: Now a major hurricane with winds of 120 mph… Irene will move northwest through the Bahamas tonight, then passing just east of the North Carolina Outer Banks Saturday afternoon. NHC still projects the system to maintain category three status up until Saturday night, when it moves north/northeast toward cooler water.

The weakening hurricane should move into the coast of Connecticut or Rhode Island Sunday afternoon with lots of wind and rain for places like Providence, Hartford, and Boston. There remains some chance the system could actually pass just east of Cape Cod without making landfall on the U.S. coast.

OTHER TROPICAL NOTES: A well organized tropical wave off the coast of Africa could become Tropical Storm Jose in coming days, but it will drift northwest, and is no threat to land. The rest of the Atlantic basin is rather quiet for now.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
