Mostly Dry But More Rain is Coming
The Saturday edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below, and on iTunes:
It is a cloudy, gray morning across Central Alabama on this first Saturday of 2007. And I’ve had no problem writing 2007 on checks and other documents, but I keep wanting to keep this December instead of January. Oh, well. And it is cool compared to the last couple of days with temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s. And I think today will be dry in spite of the cold front that will be moving through the area. Low level moisture is present but there does not appear to be any source of lift to generate any showers or rain. Of course, with the clouds you might see a bit of mist or drizzle on your windshield.
The dryness comes to an end overnight as rain returns. The cold front will stall out south of here and a weak surface wave will form along the front bringing up the rain possibilities tonight and Sunday. I think the best chances for rain will come after midnight tonight and through much of Sunday.
We should clear out Monday with some chilly mornings in store for us for Tuesday and Wednesday. We come back under a southwesterly flow aloft on Thursday and then rain chances return late Friday and Saturday. So our weather pattern remains pretty active with rain about every three or four days.
And we got a good dose of rain on yesterday morning with widespread coverage of one inch amounts. Some spots got a little more than that as is the case when we deal with thunderstorms. No where is that rain as obvious as on the Skycam from Demopolis where the river is running very full. The next bout of rain should bring another good soaking which could push some of the streams and rivers across West Alabama close to or above flood stage. The Tombigbee River at the Bevill Lock and Dam was forecast to crest just shy of flood stage on Sunday, so any added rain will push the river higher. Anyone with interests along rivers in West Alabama should keep up with the latest river flood information.
The 06Z GFS is looking a bit colder in the longer term, or voodoo land as James refers to it. A long wave trough becomes established over the eastern half of the country, and with it, cold air finally gets into the Southeast US. This is not brutally cold air, but it will seem very cold on top of the long spell of very mild weather that we’ve been having. Of course, this is voodoo land, so we’ll be watching to see if the model keeps this trend or not.
Thanks for clicking on the Weather Xtreme Video. I’ll have another one posted by 9 am Sunday morning. Join me tonight on ABC 3340 for news and weather at 6 pm and 10 pm. Have a great Saturday, and God bless.
