THIS AFTERNOON: So far showers have had a hard time surviving in Alabama today, mainly due to the drier air in place across our state. At 1:00, Birmingham was at 77 degrees with a dew point of 60. To the west, at Greenwood, MS, the dew point was 72 in a very moist airmass. We will maintain some risk of scattered showers this afternoon and tonight as the moist air moves in from the west and south.

TOMORROW THROUGH THURSDAY: These days will be warm and humid, the sky will be cloudy at times, and we will have the chance of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms each day. Highs will be in the 80s, and most communities around here should see one to two inches of rain by Thursday night. Organized severe weather is not likely although we could certainly see some thunder and lightning.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air blows into Alabama Friday with returning sunshine and highs in the 70s. But, with a deep upper low north of Alabama, I would not be surprised if low clouds dropped into the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama. Where low clouds are hanging around, the high could be only in the 60s.

Saturday and Sunday look dry and pleasant, with partly to mostly sunny days and fair, cool nights. The high Saturday will be in the 70s, and close to 80 Sunday. Most likely the coolest morning will come early Saturday when some upper 40s are possible across the colder valleys of North Alabama.

TROPICS: The disturbance in the Central Atlantic has some potential to become Tropical Storm Ophelia in coming days as it moves toward the Leeward Islands. Strengthening should be slow due to strong upper air winds in the region. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Tonight, the founder of CoCoRaHS — the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, Nolan Doesken, will be our guest. We record the show at 8:30 p.m. CDT… and you can listen live via uStream here.

I enjoyed seeing everybody at Capstone Village retirement community in Tuscaloosa this morning… be looking for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
