Spotter Training Opportunities
Needless to say, after this year’s historic tornado events, interest is sky high in severe storm spotter training. Here are two events to get on the calendar…
*Storm Alert Xtreme: This is the ABC 33/40 annual storm spotter extravaganza that will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center in downtown Birmingham. This year’s date is Saturday November 12, once again in association with the Alabama International Auto Show. The planned time is from 9:00 until 2:00 p.m… and the international beloved meteorologist, Brian Peters, who has trained well over 6,000 spotters in Alabama over the years, will be leading the session as always. Chris Novy of Oklahoma City will be in town to speak on spotter safety, and I will share some thoughts on April 27. No cost, no need to register. Just show up.
And, of course, attending Storm Alert Xtreme makes you an ABC 33/40 Skywatcher.
*NWS Training in Tuscaloosa: In cooperation with the Tuscaloosa County EMA and the University of Alabama, the Birmingham NWS office will be providing SKYWARN Spotter training at the Bryant Conference Center at 6:30 PM on September 27th. This obviously will be the 5 month “anniversary” of the April 27th outbreak, and they thought that it would be fitting to offer this training there at this time. See the entire NWS schedule here.
