RIGHT NOW: The NWS continues a flash flood warning for parts of Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, and Blount counties, where rain amounts have exceeded two inches in some spots. Here are a few rain totals from our team of Skywatchers…

Leeds 3.60″
Greystone Cove 2.68″
Mountain Brook 2.46″
Springville 1.83″

Also, strong storms have formed to the south, and the NWS has just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Lowndes and Autauga Counties.

We will expect occasional showers and storms through the evening hours, but they should calm down late tonight.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: Both the NAM and the GFS have come in drier tomorrow, with a mix of sun and clouds along with a high the mid 80s. A few showers are possible, but they should be few and far between with little dynamic support. The coverage of showers and storms should increase again Thursday with the approach of a cold front and upper trough.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Showers should end early in the day Friday, followed by a clearing sky by afternoon. The GFS is printing a high of 82 for Birmingham Friday, and we will probably adjust our forecast high upward to that level as it looks like the really cooler air won’t make it until later in the weekend.

Saturday continues to look dry, with a partly sunny sky and a high in the low 80s. Another lobe of energy and an associated cold front will push through on Sunday; we will mention some risk of showers by afternoon with a high dropping into the upper 70s. The rain Sunday for now doesn’t look to be very widespread.

NEXT WEEK: For now the weather looks relatively calm for the first half of next week, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. I guess we might hang on to some risk of a shower Monday, but for now the chance of rain looks small.

TROPICS: The wave in the Central Atlantic has a good chance to become Tropical Storm Ophelia in coming days as it moves to the west/northwest. Models are split into two camps on the future track; I still believe this is a very good candidate to be a recurving storm over the open Atlantic, not impacting the U.S., but this could change. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
