An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

COOL AND DAMP: Not much change in the overall idea today… we still have a surface low over North Florida this morning, and the easterly flow on the top of the low will provide a damp, cool, easterly flow across Alabama today keeping the sky mostly cloudy. We will maintain the chance of some scattered light rain today, with the best chance coming across the northeast counties of the state. Highs will range from the 60s over East Alabama to the low to mid 70s over West Alabama. Where rain does fall today, amounts will be light, generally under 1/4 inch.

TOMORROW: Looks generally dry and warmer with a high in the mid to upper 70s along with a mixture of sun and clouds.

THURSDAY: A little model madness here; a cold front will pass through the state with the GFS looking dry, but the NAM is much more aggressive with showers and storms on the front. For now we will simply split the difference and mention just the chance of a shower, and we can fine tune the forecast as we get closer. The high will be close to, or just under the 80 degree mark for most spots.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A nice surge of dry air rolls into the state, setting up another fantastic fall weekend. Look for sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights; the coolest morning should come early Saturday when upper 40s are likely. We begin to warm up a bit Sunday; the GFS is printing a high of 82 for Birmingham after highs in the 70s Friday and Saturday.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of a phased long wave upper trough impacting the Deep South Tuesday with a good chance of showers, and maybe even a few strong thunderstorms, followed by the coolest air so far this season by Wednesday and Thursday. If the model happens to be correct, we might be looking at our first widespread frost of the season by Thursday morning. But, we note the ECMWF is not as aggressive with a weaker upper trough that is farther north. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: Quiet as can be across the Atlantic basin and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on the new episode we recorded last night.
