THIS MORNING: A strong upper trough coming out of the Plains is supporting a surface low near St. Louis with a trailing cold front. Ahead of this, a band of showers is moving through North Mississippi, and will enter Northwest Alabama soon. So, we will forecast a good chance of showers today, and maybe a little thunder in spots, with a cloudy sky and a high in the low 60s. Due to the lack of moisture (the 00Z sounding from the Shelby County Airport still was very dry), rain amounts should be light despite the really good forcing from this system. The NAM is printing 0.19″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is slightly wetter with 0.28″.

The rain should be east of Birmingham by 5:00 this afternoon, and all of the rain should be out of the state by 8:00 p.m.

TOMORROW: Some clouds could linger into the morning hours, but the sky should become partly to mostly sunny by afternoon. The air tomorrow moving into the state will be coming off the snow cover over the Rockies and Kansas, so it should be a rather cool day with a high in the low 60s.

WONDERFUL WEEKEND: The weekend still looks very nice. Lots of sunshine, with pleasant days and cool nights. The CAD effect should keep East Alabama cooler, where highs near the Georgia border will be in the 60-65 degree range. West Alabama will be warmer with highs closer to 70.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tomorrow night, the weather will be clear and cool with temperatures falling through the 50s.

ALABAMA-LSU: What a great night for the big game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa Saturday night (7:00 p.m. CDT kickoff). The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from the mid 60s at kickoff, into the upper 50s by the fourth quarter. The wind will be out of the south at 6-12 mph. And, for the tailgaters, the day will be sunny with a high close to 70 degrees. Doesn’t get much better.

NEXT WEEK: Global models continue to suggest the next good rain event will come on Wednesday of next week, and with good upper support and decent instability, we will have to monitor that for signs of severe weather potential as the event gets closer. Colder air follows by Thursday and Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up on Saturday, November 12 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!

Today I will be speaking at a meeting of the Emergency Physicians Association of Alabama at the Wynfrey in Hoover… it will be extremely interesting as the title of the meeting is “Day of Disaster: The April 27th Tornado Outbreak – What Did We Learn?” Looking forward to that… the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 3:30 this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
