There are some big changes coming to our weather in the Southeast. After a very nice round of mild weather, it appears that we will be turning sharply colder along with the threat of some wintery precipitation. No, probably not a really big snow storm or anything akin to March of 1993, but certainly a strong possibility that we will see some snow flying in the air.

For today, moisture is on the increased as evidenced by the clouds. We should continue to see some peeks at the sun from time to time today and the Iron Bowl in Auburn should still remain dry. Looks like the high this afternoon should reach to near 70 with much of the game played in 60-degree weather.

Rain moves in after the sun goes down tonight, with the potential for some heavy rain over the next 36 hours. In fact, rainfall amounts are likely to be in the 1 to 2 inch range over a wide portion of the northern two-thirds of Alabama. There could be a few claps of thunder to go along with the rain Sunday, however, instability values do not climb significantly so it appears likely that this will be primarily a rain event.

Clouds and rain will stick around for Sunday and Monday as colder air arrives Monday. The layer near the ground will remain warm but the atmosphere about a thousand feet up or so chills nicely with moisture expected to stick around. This becomes the recipe for light snow or snow flurries on Monday, perhaps hanging into some of Tuesday morning. Now do not run out and stock up on bread and milk! This is not likely to result in any accumulation especially when you consider the warm soil temperatures. This is just going to be one of those times when we get to see some snow flakes in the air and enjoy a little hopeful speculation on what a White Christmas might be like.

The weather improves at mid week while we stay relatively chilly. I’m not expecting to see temperatures get out of the lower 40s on Monday and perhaps only into the mid 40s on Tuesday. By Thursday we should be back to the lower 50s with partly cloudy skies.

Our next round of wet weather is not anticipated until after next weekend but with a fairly strong trough over the eastern half of the country, we will stay somewhat chilly through next weekend. Typical highs for this time of November run in the lower 60s and we should stay below that for much of the upcoming week – after today.

Peeking well out into the future, the long range forecasts suggest a continuation of an active flow pattern with a continuation of traveling weather systems. The GFS does suggest a return to milder weather around the 12th of December with a nearly zonal flow pattern. Not sure just how much I trust that outlook with the active nature of the pattern for the next 10 days, but we’ll see.
