When it comes to thunderstorms, expected the unexpected. How many times have I said that over the years…

Severe storms are breaking out to the west of Alabama, and one storm is showing signs of rotation only about 30 miles west of the Alabama state line, and about 45 miles west of Aliceville, in Pickens County. A tornado warning is in effect for Winston and Noxubee Counties, Mississippi.

This storm will cross into Pickens County within the next 30 minutes.

Instability values are still rather marginal for severe weather in Alabama, with dewpoints near 50 over the western half of the state. And, there is little surface based CAPE available at this point. But, the radar looks pretty impressive for a storm in this kind of environment, and the Birmingham NWS could consider a tornado warning for Pickens County is the signature remains impressive.

To the west, there has been tree and power line damage in the Jackson, MS area, and a tornado watch remains in effect for basically the southern half of Mississippi and Alabama.

More shortly…
