Brighter Days Ahead

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today due to travel**

I had a late afternoon weather program today up at Corner… won’t be able to post a new video, and thanks to the great American weather legend J.B. Elliott for the discussion below…

SLOWLY RETURNING TO BETTER WEATHER: Alabama’s big snow event (well, at least a small snow event) is over and now we get busy to return the state to more typical late November and early December weather. A number of places in Alabama did get enough snow to temporarily look like a winter wonderland. One of the most impressive sights was atop Mt. Cheaha, Alabama’s highest point, at an elevation of 2,407 feet. The tricky closed low aloft, loaded with cold air aloft, is still around and it is keeping Alabama covered by a deck of clouds this afternoon. But that pesky low will move northeast and Alabama will see some improving weather.

WHEN DOES THAT HAPPEN? Not today. The precipitation is mostly gone but a thick cloud cover continues. The clouds will still be around tomorrow morning, but it will be clearing during the afternoon. We expect the low temperature tonight just under freezing. It should be sunny all day Thursday. We think the 27 that we have forecast for early Thursday morning could make it the coldest morning so far this season. Friday should be a very pleasant day with near total sunshine and highs in the mid 60s. Our next rain should be in the form of a few showers Sunday night. Those should increase in number on Monday.

USA NOTES: Bitter cold air continues to build up over Alaska. That place becomes a regular continental refrigerator this time of year and, when conditions are right, Alaska can send us a huge chunk of bitter cold arctic air. Temperatures were way below freezing over most of that state. At Deadhorse, it was 30 below zero with a wind chill of 51 below. Down here where 48 states touch each other, the coldest was 3 above zero at International Falls and Crane Lake, Minnesota. Warmest was 87 yesterday at Riverside, California.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
