Wet And Cooler Weather Ahead

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS MORNING: The sky is mostly cloudy across Alabama, with rain to the west over parts of West Tennessee and North Mississippi. While our temperatures are mostly in the 50s, the air is much cooler behind a nearly stationary front between Memphis and Muscle Shoals. Memphis reports light rain and only 43 degrees, while Little Rock has light rain and 42. That front won’t move much today, so the rain should mostly hold to the west of Alabama. We will be mostly cloudy and mild with a high around 70 in most spots, well above average for early December in Alabama.

TOMORROW/WEDNESDAY: A strong upper air impulse over the southwest U.S. will give the front a slow push eastward, and rain should increase tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow will be also cooler as the rain falls with temperatures holding in the 50s all day. Wednesday looks even colder with many places holding in the 40s with a cool north wind and lingering clouds. Some light rain could hang on into Wednesday morning, but anything past tomorrow night should be pretty light and spotty.

The NAM is printing 0.77″ through Wednesday for Birmingham, while the GFS is a little drier with 0.53″. Accordingly, we expect rain amounts in the 1/2 to 1 inch range for the next 72 hours. There are flash flood watches north and west of here, but this won’t be enough rain for any flooding problems around here.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The sky becomes partly sunny Thursday, and Friday will be a sunny day for Alabama. The weather stays seasonally cool with highs in the 50s.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend will be dry with cold mornings and cool afternoons. Looks like lows down in the 20s, with highs in the 50-55 degree range.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any really major weather events for Alabama for the next 15 days, although the 00Z GFS does show a potential thunderstorm event around December 20, out there in the land of voodoo. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record this week’s show tonight at 8:30 p.m. CST…
